Hello everyone! I’m Josie and I have a passion for sewing for my daughter. While I love making her frilly dresses, let’s face it…they aren’t always the most practical for the energy level and activities of an almost 3-year-old. She loves playing at the playground and jumping around in ‘puddy muddles’ (mud puddles), so when Lokelanicame out I knew it was the perfect pattern for her playful antics (no sand down the front of her shorts and no getting stuck on the slide?? YES PLEASE!).
I then got to thinking about Buttercup.
Buttercup has the cutest cross-over front & back design and is super easy to get on and off – what a perfect top to mash with Lokelani! Another adorable romper for my daughter’s mommy-made wardrobe.
Here is how I did it – I hope you give it a try!
Step 1:
First, you will need the following pattern pieces from Lokelani:
Shorts (or capri) front
Shorts (or capri) back
Waistband
Drawstring tie
Interfacing
Cuffs
And you will need the following pattern pieces from Buttercup:
Front and back
Binding
Sleeves
You need to take a little length off the Buttercup front and back pieces in order for it to be a good fit. I took off ½” (1.3cm) based on the 2T measurements, but the best thing to do is lay the Lokelani top pieces on the buttercup and cut off the difference.
Step 2:
Sew up the Buttercup bodice, Lokelani bottoms (shorts or capris) and cuffs, and Lokelani drawstring tie as you normally would.
Step 3:
The waistband is a little different as Lokelani has a lined top where Buttercup does not.
Follow the Lokelani waistband directions until you get to step 13.
Skip steps 13-15 (attaching the waistband to the bodice).
Instead, put the wrong sides of the main and lining pieces together and baste the top and bottom closed (this will make it easier when attaching to the Buttercup bodice).
Step 4:
Then continue with step 16 from the Lokelani instructions (sew the case stitching lines).
After that, attach the waistband to the Buttercup top by placing the bodice (bottom side) inside the waistband (top side and right sides together) and sew
Step 5:
Then place the waistband (bottom side) right sides together with your Lokelani shorts/capris and sew
Add your drawstring to the Ta-da! You did it! Easy and such a cute result.
