Epaulette Pattern FREE

Free Epaulette Pattern

I used these to make my daughter a k-pop themed jacket, and hope you have fun with them too! They pair perfectly with our new Petal Cropped Blazer pattern.

The free pattern pieces can be found here.

The templates at 100% scale are sized for a child size 6, so it’s recommended to first cut a paper template to measure on the model before cutting the fabric. The finished size is the inner line on the template.

  • Fabric
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Fusible Fleece interfacing (Pellon 987F recommended)
  • Optional:
  • Hem or fusible tape
  • Glue stick
  • Bias tape
  • Embellishments as desired

For each epaulette you are making, cut:

1 main fabric on the outer cut line, 1 lining fabric on the outer cut line and 2 fleece interfacing on the inner cut line. Fuse the interfacing on the WRONG sides of all your main and lining pieces, centering them in the pieces.

Place pipe cleaners evenly spaced across the LINING pieces.  The beginning of the pipe cleaners should be slightly inside of the interfacing.  Sew with a long and wide zig stag stitch to secure each pipe cleaner.  Stop sewing slighting inside the interfacing.

Clip the ends of the pipe cleaners off.  Make sure there are no pointy ends sticking out.

If you are using any heat transfer embellishments, add them now to the main pieces.  You may also wish to add any other embellishments that are centered in the epaulettes.

Pin/clip the main and lining pieces together.  Sew around the pieces, using the interfacing as a stitch line guide.  Leave the bottom part of the pieces open.

Trim the seam allowances except for in the open area at the bottom.

Turn the epaulettes right side out and press well.  Use a chopstick or similar to push out the corners.  Pin/clip the bottom opening closed, folding in the seam allowances.  Top stitch all the way around the pieces or just top stitch the openings.

Add bas tape or any other decorative elements you wish.  It may be easier to glue or use hem tape to apply décor. Bend the epaulettes to the desired shape and hand stitch onto your jacket.  You can also use Velcro, snaps or your preferred method to attach.

It’s that easy to make beautiful epaulettes to add to your Petal blazer! These take the costume to the next level, and can be used for other looks too! If you make epaulettes using this tutorial, we would love to see. Share with us on instagram at @booandlupatterns or share in our Facebook group.
