The Free Headband Patterns
Ready to get sewing?
First, gather your materials.
Knit Fabric (stretchy) fabrics. You will want something with good recovery. Recovery means that when you stretch the fabric it will bounce back to it’s original size (it doesn’t stay stretched out). While you could use something with less recovery, your child won’t be able to wear it all day because as the day goes on it’ll stretch out and become too loose.
Thread (I use Aurifil or Guterman)
Next, cut your fabric using this chart:
Directions:
- All 3 versions of the headband start with the same method of construction. You will lay your band piece right sides up.
- Fold your band, right sides together, so that the longest raw edges are aligned. Pin or clip along the raw edges.
- Sew with a 3/8″ seam allowance along your raw edge using a stretch stitch. Please note, you will want to use a matching thread so that you cannot see it. For the purposes of this tutorial I’ve used a contrasting thread so you can easily see it.
- Turn your band right sides out and center the seam as shown in the photo below. This makes it so that you cannot see the seam when being worn.
- For the knotted headband continue below. Simple and bow headband skip to step 11.
You will be tying a simple knot in your band. Start by crossing your pieces in an X like shown in the photo below. - You will now take the piece that was on top and bring it under and through the loop.
- Pull your tail through to create the knot but leave your knot loose. We will be adjusting it in a future step.
- Bring your two tails together and align the raw edges right sides together. You want your center seams facing the outside.
- Sew the raw edges together with a 3/8″ seam allowance.
- Now, because we left our knot loose, you can pull and maneuver the fabric so that the seam you just sewed is inside the knot and cannot be seen once tightened. This will take some maneuvering, but is well worth it as it makes the finished product look very professional. Tighten your knot once adjusted properly.
- For simple and bow headbands continue here.
Take your band and fold it in half, right sides together, so that the two short raw edges are aligned. Clip or pin in place. - Sew the short raw edge with a 3/8″ seam allowance.
- Using your iron press your seam flat, you may wish to trim the seam allowance at this point as well. This helps to reduce bulk.
- Place your center piece right sides up
- Fold your center piece right sides together so that the long raw edges are aligned. Pin or clip in place.
- Sew along the long raw edge with a 3/8″ seam allowance.
- Turn right sides out and center the seam as shown in the photo below.
- Take your center piece and place it around your band so that it covers the band seam. You will align the raw edges of your center piece, right sides together, and clip or pin in place.
- Sew the short raw edge of the center piece using a 3/8″ seam allowance, being very careful not to catch the headband in your seam. I like to back stitch a couple times to reinforce this seam.
- Turn your center piece right sides out and adjust the headband if necessary so that the center piece covers the seam fully.
If you’ve chosen to do the simple headband, you are finished. If you are adding a bow, continue below. - Lay your bow piece right sides up.
- Fold your bow so that the two shorter edges are aligned, right sides together. Pin or clip in place, leaving a 1.5″ opening in the center.
- Sew along the pinned edge using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Be sure that you leave a 1.5″ opening.
- Maneuver your bow so that the seam you just sewed in the previous step is centered. Pin or clip the remaining two raw edges.
- Sew the two open sides that you pinned in the previous step using a 3/8″ seam allowance.
- OPTIONAL: If you prefer a rounder looking bow, when sewing you will want to taper the corners as shown in the image below.
- Using the opening that you left in step 23, turn your bow right sides out. You do not need to worry about closing the opening as it will be hidden under the bow center.
- We will now insert our bow piece into the headband. TIP: To get the trendy extra scrunchy look you will insert the bow so that the longest edge is going up and down.
Using your fingers, pinch your bow piece so that you can slide it into the bow center that is already attached to your headband. - Here is what your finished bow will look like.
- If you’ve rounded the corners on your bow like in optional step 26 this is what your finished bow will look like.
And we’re done! I hope you’ve enjoyed these free headband patterns!
