Adding pockets to bike shorts

Adding Pockets to Bike Shorts

A simple pair of bike shorts like the Otter pattern (child and adult) are great because they are a fast and easy sew. But sometimes you may want to elevate your favorite basic short by adding a simple pocket. This is a super easy hack to do, and today we’re going to show you how!

It’s Kelly here, guest blogger for this week’s Boo and Lu blog.

Lets add some pockets!

Following the Otter shorts pattern, cut out the shorts pieces, plus either one or two rectangles for your pockets. You can measure these out for your phone, keys, or whatever you want to put in the pocket. Make sure to include the seam allowance if you decide to measure out your own. For my iPhone, I cut out two 6×9” pieces.

Fold in the long edges of the pocket pieces ½” wrong sides together, and press. Then fold the top down wrong sides together ½”, press, and top stitch.

Take your shorts piece and find the center. Line up your pocket piece at the centre aligned with the bottom, with the wrong side of the pocket touching the right side of the shorts piece. Top stitch down the sides of the pocket to attach to the main shorts piece. Repeat with the other shorts piece, if you are doing two pockets.

Continue with the pattern, until you reach the step to hem the shorts. Fold up the pocket piece with the hem, to enclose the bottom of the pocket. Finish the shorts as per the instructions.

And you’re done! It’s really that easy!

You can use this method to add pockets to any bike shorts you have, including Otter. It is a fast and easy method, perfect for your every day bike shorts. Enjoy!
