Easy DIY Clover Applique Tutorial
Valentine’s Day is over and now St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner…. and you can use the applique from one holiday to make a fun project for the next! Today we are making a DIY clover applique shape using hearts.
This tutorial will show you how to make a diy clover applique using hearts from the Sugar Applique pattern, but you can also free-hand your hearts if you prefer. We recommend the Sugar pattern because in addition to perfect heart shapes, you get a full tutorial explaining in detail exactly how to sew a perfect applique!
You will need:
- Heart 1-S from the Sugar applique pattern
- Heart 2-S from the Sugar applique pattern
- Heat n Bond lite (or other iron-on backing)
- Fabric Scrap
- Paper and Pencil
Preparation:

Print or project and trace your heart pieces. You will need to print/trace and cut TWO copies of Heart 1-S, and ONE copy of Heart 2-s.

Lay out a sheet of blank paper. Lay the two Heart 1-S pieces on the paper, so that they are both sideways, mirrored so the lower points touch. Trace the hearts.

Lay Heart 2-S on the paper, so that the lower point extends just below where the other two heart points touch.

Trace around Heart 2-S, stopping when the pencil meets the first two hearts (don’t trace over the bottom point of Heart 2-S so that it has a smooth finish)

Draw in the stem you want. Use pencil and sketch lightly until you have the shape you like! No need to make it perfect- a whimsical stem is charming!
Making the Clover

Use your traced paper clover as a new pattern piece. Cut around the outside of the clover. You can cut around the stem too, or choose to make the stem separate.

Use this as a pattern piece and trace onto your heat-n-bond using the same instructions as in the Sugar tutorial.

Remove the paper backing and fuse to your fabric. Add applique to project. Finish sewing according to Sugar tutorial directions.

Alternately, if you want to use different fabrics for each leaf, simply cut out the leaves and stem separately instead of as one piece!

That’s it! You turned your Valentine’s themed heart applique pattern into a St. Patrick’s Day pattern! This is a fun and simple way to make a cute diy clover applique for a fun St. Patrick’s Day look. I added my clover to a Tamarack shirt for my daughter!

Happy Sewing and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
