3D printing and sewing

3D Printing and Sewing

Hi everyone! Our family got a 3D printer for Christmas, and I couldn’t wait to incorporate 3D printing into my sewing life.

Combining two hobbies can be so much fun! Over the past couple of months, I’ve found some really great 3D printed tools and accessories that help with organization, keeping small tools close by, and even adding unique elements to my sewing projects. Let’s take a look at 3D printing and sewing, and how to integrate the two!

Some of our amazing Boo and Lu tester team has also been finding creative ways to combine 3D printing with sewing, and we thought it would be fun to share some of those ideas with you too.

Ideas for merging 3d Printing and Sewing

  • Clamp on bins – I printed two of these and use one for fabric scraps and one for pins/clips that I remove while sewing.  They have been great for helping to keep my table clean and organized.

  • Finger fabric pusher – This has been great when I need to push small piece of fabric under my presser foot without the fear of accidentally sewing through my finger!

  • Measuring tape spool – this does a great job keeping my tape untangled and way easier to put away.

  •  Scissors holder – I stuck this on my machine with sticky tack and it has held great – and I always know where my thread snippers are!

  • Sewing edge ruler – this is in centimeters but great for measuring seams and hems

  • Serger cut offs collector – I couldn’t find a file specifically for my machine, but this one worked well anyways! It is SO NICE to not have the seam allowances everywhere after serging!

  • End beads for ties.  I used fun heart shaped beads to finish off the back of this Linden dress.

  • FABRIC!  Yes, you heard that right!  I found an amazing resource that teaches you how to print on fabric.  Pairing with a 3D holographic plate makes it extra fun!  You can find some free test files and other files to purchase here: https://thangs.com/designer/kaizen3dprints
I can’t wait to try out a purse!
  • Our tester Aimee printed pattern weights – she added washers to them for extra weight

  • Our tester Tara printed coverstitch hem accessories

  • Our tester Katie printed thread spool holders for her peg board

  •  Our tester Patricia has printed many things including:

Sewing bridge:

And even buttons

Other things our amazing testers have printed include:

Replacement parts for a 1980’s hobbylock serger, projector mounts, a zipper holder for zipper tape, a magnetic pin holder, various organizers and a thread pulling hook.

I’ve also recently found a great facebook group:

3D Printing for Sewing and Bagmaking

There are a lot more file links and examples in this group for how you can combine two fun hobbies.

Have you printed anything that’s helped you in your sewing space? Come tell us about it in the Boo and Lu Facebook Group, we’d love to hear from you!

Xoxo, Josie
