A Gentle Approach to Sewing for Mental Health (and Me Made May)

May always feels like a deep breath for me.

The light lingers a little longer. The flowers are starting to bloom. It feels like everywhere I look, there’s a quiet reminder that I’m allowed to begin again.

May also happens to be Mental Health Awareness Month, and if you’re anything like me, that phrase can feel… heavy. Important, yes, but also overwhelming. Like one more thing I should be doing better.

So, instead of adding pressure, I want to offer you something different:

A softer approach.

Not “fixing”.
Not optimizing.
Not becoming a “better version” of yourself.

Sewing for Mental Health | Boo and Lu

Just…. coming back to yourself. And for me, that place has always been sewing.

Sewing as a Grounding Practice

There’s something quietly powerful about working with your hands. It gives your mind somewhere to rest.

I’ve made it a point to notice the little things while I sew: the quiet thump of my presser foot as the fabric is fed through, the way the fabric feels between my fingers.

Working with your hands gives your mind somewhere to rest. Not in a dramatic way, but in the small, steady moments that gently remind your mind: you’re safe here.

It’s so easy to slip into seeking perfection, but I want to invite you to stay present instead. To remind yourself that no one is demanding perfection from you.

You don’t have to be good at it.
You don’t have to finish anything.
You don’t even have to know what you’re doing.

You just have to begin.

When Motivation Feels Hard

Let’s be honest for a second.

There are seasons when even the things we love feel heavy.

When your sewing machine sits untouched.
When your fabric stash feels more overwhelming than inspiring.
When starting feels impossible.

And if that’s where you are at right now, I want you to hear this:

You are not behind.
You are not failing.
You don’t need to “get back on track.”

You might just need a gentler way in.

A Softer Way to Sew This Month

If you want to reconnect with sewing during Mental Health Awareness Month (or even just ease into Me Made May), try shifting the goal completely.

Instead of finishing something…
Instead of sewing every day…
Instead of making something “impressive”…

Try this instead:

Sew for 10 minutes

That’s it. Set a timer.

No expectations beyond showing up.

Sometimes you’ll stop at 10 minutes.
Sometimes you won’t.

Both count.

Choose Comfort Projects

Not ambitious ones. Not complicated ones.

Just… comforting ones.

Soft knits. Familiar patterns. Something you’ve made before. Quick, easy, projects… or slow, methodical ones.

Let sewing feel like coming home, not proving something.

Let It Be Imperfect

Crooked seams. Uneven hems. Skipped stitches.

Leave them.

Perfection isn’t the goal, presence is.

Make Something Just for You

Not for your kids.
Not for your business.
Not for content.

Just you.

Even if it never leaves your house (or your sewing space).

A Gentle Take on Me Made May

If you’re participating in Me Made May, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

You don’t need a capsule wardrobe.
You don’t need daily outfit photos.
You don’t need a perfectly curated handmade closet.

What if it looked like this instead?

Wearing one handmade piece that makes you feel good.
Noticing how it feels on your body.
Remembering: I made this.

That’s enough. More than enough.

We live in a world that is constantly asking us, “What did you accomplish today?”

Sewing mindfully pushes back against that.

What matters is this moment, even if nothing is finished. The process, even if no one sees it.

And most importantly, you matter, even when you’re not producing.

A Little Note From Me

Sewing has carried me through some of the hardest seasons of my life.

Not by fixing everything, but by giving me something steady to hold onto when everything else felt uncertain.

If you’re in a hard season right now, I hope you find your way back to something that feels like that for you, whether it’s sewing or something else entirely.

And, if sewing is that place, I’m really glad you’re here.

A Gentle Invitation

If you feel up to it this month, I’d love for you to join me in a softer version of Me Made May.

No pressure, no rules.

Just small, mindful moments with the things you’ve made.

And if you do, I’d love to see. Tag me or share in the Boo and Lu community so we can celebrate those little moments together.
