Ember Maternity Hack
With a growing bump it can be hard to find clothes that fit (and that are comfortable)! Enter the Ember Lounge Set!
With this simple Ember Maternity Hack you can have a lounge set that fits and is comfortable on your growing bump! Note: This hack is only for the Ember shorts/pants. With the ease of the top you only need to make adjustments if your waist size is 3 sizes larger/smaller than your upper bust. Please refer to the top adjustment guide in the tutorial if you need to make adjustments to your top.
*Please make all necessary adjustments to your bottoms (according to the tutorial) before making the maternity adjustment.*
Adjusting the front seam
You can either cut your front pieces out first then make the adjustments or make the adjustments to your pattern piece then cut out your fabric.
*All adjustments will be made to the front shorts/pants pieces only.
1: Mark a line 3 ½” from the top of the pants on the front crotch curve.
2: Mark a line ⅜” from the side seam on the top raw edge.
3: Draw a curve to connect the 2 markings, I used a French curve for this step.
4: Cut along the curve you just made.
If you are not adding pockets skip to step 7, if adding pockets continue below to step 5.
5: Lay your pocket piece on top of your front piece, both right sides up. (Pocket is wrong side up in photo only to more clearly show what is going on.) Line up the side seams and the top corner of the pocket opening with the curve of the front piece. Cut along the curve of the front piece to match the top of the pocket to the curve we created previously.
No adjustments need to be made to the pocket facing. Sew pocket facing, pocket opening, and iron edges of pocket according to the Ember tutorial.
6. Before attaching your pocket to the front pieces you may need to trim a bit more off the top of the pocket to match the curve we created. Make sure your pocket is square on your front piece.
7: Follow the instructions in the tutorial for attaching the pocket, sewing the side seams, inseam, crotch curve, waistband side seams, and attaching the waistband main and lining together at the top seam. *I highly recommend adding clear elastic into the top waistband seam when doing this hack. Even if your fabric has good recovery, your growing bump may stretch it out and the elastic helps hold the bottoms in place.
8: Due to the curve we created the side seams of the bottoms are NOT quarter points, so keep this in mind before attaching your waistband. The side seams of the waistband will end up in front of the bottom side seams if you match true quarter points. Colored clips in the picture show true quarter points for the size I made.
9: Attach waistband and hem bottoms according to the tutorial.
Your Ember set is all finished. I hope you love them as much as I do!
