Sew a Sailor Bow

How to sew a sailor bow using the Fauna classic bow pattern!

Boo and Lu has several darling bow patterns- the Flora hand tied bow, the Monarch butterfly bow, and the Fauna classic bow. With this hack, you can sew a beautiful sailor bow using the Fauna pattern! In addition to the classic bow and double bow the pattern already includes, you can use this modification to turn it into a timeless sailor bow. Let’s go!

Let’s sew a bow!

Cut the largest size main bow piece and the center piece from the Fauna pattern. Cut an additional main bow piece. This will be the tails. You can use the same fabric, as I did here, or a contrasting fabric.

Following the Fauna pattern tutorial, sew the bow until the step for attaching the center. You should have a prepared bow main and center, but they are not attached yet.

Set aside the prepared bow and center and get your second main piece. Fold in half lengthwise right sides together. Cut each short end on a 45-degree angle, with the longest line being the folded line, angling inward at the raw edge. When opened, the center fold line is wider than the top and bottom, as show in the pictures.

With the piece folded right sides together, sew the raw edges leaving a 1″ opening at the center. The two angled edges are sewn, and the opening is at the center of the long raw edge.

Trim the seam allowances at the corners, then turn right side out and press well. The opening does not need to be sewn shut, just make sure the seam allowance is pressed inward.

Using the same method as in the Fauna tutorial for the main bow, pinch/fold/tie the tail piece at the center.

Place the tail directly under the bow, stacking the centers, and place a pin through. Using embroidery thread, wrap the thread around the two pieces and knot, so the pieces are held tightly together. Remove the pin.

Finally, return to the Fauna tutorial and attach the center of the bow as the tutorial instructs.

Optionally, you can use the Fauna medium sized bow and double bow instructions to create a double sailor bow! However, this does make the center very bulky, so it is recommended that you use a very light weight fabric for this.

That’s all there is to making a sailor bow out of the Fauna pattern!
